Why do people love snow?
Much of the country has been slammed by a major snowstorm, and as anyone dealing with all that snow knows, it can be a huge inconvenience. It can force you to cancel plans, keep you holed up inside your home, and give you a lot of shoveling work to do.
But despite that, psychologists say many people really don't mind a major snowstorm and here's why:
- Snow taps straight into childhood memories like snow days, sledding, holidays, and that feeling of waking up to a world transformed overnight.
- Snow also hits all five senses. It's bright; it has a feel, a taste, and even a smell. It also comes with a quiet calmness.
- Part of the charm is that snow is fleeting. It doesn’t last long, so when it arrives, people savor it and it pushes us out of our routines and makes us feel like a kid again.
- There’s the thrill of unpredictability. The uncertainty of how much snow will fall keeps people glued to the forecast.
